Description

Ewen Manor is a large detached house built in the late 18th century to early 19th century, with later 19th-century wings. The structure is made of coursed and dressed stone, featuring alternating flush quoins and a hipped stone slate roof with scattered stone stacks. The main front range faces south and is flanked by single-storey wings from the mid-19th century, with cross wings on each side creating a U-shape. The building is mostly three storeys tall.

The south front has three windows, which are 16-pane sashes set in flush stone surrounds. The second floor features shallow 8-pane sashes. On the ground floor, there are long 12-pane sashes on either side of a central stone porch. This porch is supported by attached fluted Doric columns on bases, and it has a fluted frieze and a moulded triangular pediment. The door consists of six fielded panels with decorative beading on the upper and lower pairs, along with a decorative rectangular fanlight above.

Each side wing has a parapet and a stone end stack, with one wing featuring a large triple sash window of 4/12/4 panes that has a cambered head and a decorative pelmet. The returns of the wings have scattered fenestration, mostly consisting of 12-pane sashes or paired casements. On the right-hand return, there is a two-storey wing with a shallow hipped slate roof, and behind it, in a coursed rubble wall, are two arched openings that appear to be bee-boles, flanking an arched well hole.

Many rooms retain internal wooden shutters, and a large room in the south-east wing boasts fine panelling. There is a stick baluster stair with a wreathed and ramped handrail located at the centre to the rear of the main range. The remainder of the interior is inaccessible but is likely to be of interest.
