Description
The Former Ebenezer Methodist Church, now known as Ebenezer House, is a building dating from 1885. Originally serving as a church, it has since been converted into apartments. The structure features fine quality ashlar stone on the front, with hammer-dressed stone on the sides and rear, topped by a Welsh blue-slate roof. It is designed in the Italianate Classical style.
The building consists of two tall storeys raised on a basement, with a symmetrical facade of five bays. It has a pedestal height string course, a sill course, and an impost string. The central three bays are accessed by a flight of stone steps and feature a giant Corinthian engaged tetrastyle portico, a deep entablature, and a bracketed triangular pediment with an oculus in the tympanum and a finial at the apex. The second and fourth bays include archivolted arched doorways with foliate carvings on the impost string and keystones, while the central window mirrors this style. Above, there are archivolted arched windows. The outer bays each have coupled shafted archivolted arched windows on both floors, with entablatures topped by shaped pediments.
The left-hand return displays seven bays of two-light windows with arched lights, featuring engaged Doric column mullions and sill bands. The right-hand return has plain two-light windows with arched lights.
