Description
Morley Central Methodist Church, originally known as Queen Street Methodist Church, was built in 1862 by James Simpson. The church is constructed from hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh blue-slate roof. It is a two-storey building with a symmetrical front that has four bays. The exterior includes rusticated quoins, a plinth, a first-floor sill band, and a pedimented gable.
The central two bays are highlighted by a close-set pair of large portals framed by Doric piers with engaged Doric columns and a deep entablature. The flanking windows are set in shouldered plain-stone surrounds with keyed cambered heads and consoles to the sills. The first-floor windows feature keyed archivolted arches with pilaster jambs, framed by pilaster strips that have carved fluted console brackets supporting cornices above. The bracketed pediment has the same moulding returned to the sides as an eaves cornice. The tympanum contains a large oculus set on an acanthus rinceaux scrolled base. The left and right returns have six bays of similar windows to the front, all with margin and leaded glazing.
Inside, the church remains unaltered and is finely furnished, featuring an apsidal-ended gallery, box pews, and an ornate panelled and turned pulpit, along with a table and rails. Behind the pulpit is an organ loft that houses a Binns Organ from 1920/21. The church also contains stained glass windows dating from around 1901 and has seating for 1,000 people.
