Description

Barclays Bank and Figure Fitness Centre is a former co-operative shop that has been converted into a bank with a health club above on the first floor. It was built around 1898, with some alterations made to the ground floor in the mid to late 20th century. The building features ashlar stonework and a modern tile wall at the ground level, topped with a Welsh blue-slate and lead roof. It stands three stories tall and occupies a corner site.

The corner bay includes a doorway and curved windows on each floor, topped by an octagonal turret with an onion-shaped dome. The facade facing Queen Street has five bays, while the facade on Albion Street has seven bays, both of which are enhanced by pilasters with carved capitals. The first floor features a balustrade, a dentil cornice, and windows with basket arches supported by three consoles with imposts. The second-floor windows are designed as three-light mullioned and transomed windows.

The fifth bay on the right side projects forward and contains a large doorway with a keyed arch, pilasters, brackets, an entablature, and a swan-neck pediment, with a tympanum displaying carved festoons. Above the second-floor window, there is a segmental pediment with a carved motto that reads "LABOUR AND WAIT." The building is topped with a pavilion roof that has ornamental wrought and cast-iron cresting and a mansard roof with a continuous dormer window. The rear elevation is made of rock-faced stone and features a four-storey turret staircase. This building is included for its group value.
