Description

The former Union Bank, located at No. 15 Bridge Street, was built in 1900 (as indicated by the date stone). It is an ashlar-faced building with brick to the rear, topped by a Welsh slate gable roof. Originally comprising a ground-floor banking hall with offices above, the building has three storeys and an attic.

The asymmetrical front, facing Bridge Street, features a polygonal corner tower that projects over the main entrance owing to a canted corner design. This tower rises to three pedimented gabled clocks, linked by short arcades above the cornice line, and is crowned by a dome with a finial. The ground floor is rusticated throughout, while the upper floors contain rectangular windows, with replacements to the sash windows. The principal windows on the second floor are positioned under concentric recessed arches and are set within a Jacobethan stepped gable. Window bays are emphasised by double pilasters. A right-hand entrance is sheltered by a segmental pediment. A ridge stack and a dormer with a decorative gable are also present. The bank occupies a prominent position at the base of Bridge Street, and is situated in a group of other listed buildings.
