Description
The remains of the medieval town wall of Stockport are located at the rear of the premises occupied by Midland Bank on Great Underbank. This section consists of about 7 metres of roughly hewn red sandstone ashlar blocks, supported by a buttress. Approximately 0.75 metres above the top of the buttress and 1 metre to the south along the wall, there is a water spout that drains the original rampart and cuts through the remaining section of the wall. Another fragment of the wall is found to the east of Mealhouse Brow, behind numbers 9 to 13 (odd). This fragment is less substantial and consists of a collection of pieces rather than a continuous stretch. Additional fragments are reported to exist at the rear of numbers 9 to 13 (odd) Little Underbank.
