Description
No 10 Great Underbank, formerly known as Underbank Hall, was the town house of the Ardernes of Harden, who lived here until 1823. At the time of the survey, it was being used as bank premises. This 16th-century manor house is in excellent condition and features a timber frame with plaster. It has two storeys and attics, with the upper storey slightly coved and a moulded wood bressummer along the first floor. There are four moulded wood transom and mullion windows with eight lights on console brackets. The lower storey has almost continuous fenestration in the same style.
The building includes a two-storeyed porch wing with square-headed openings and moulded wood cornices, topped with three coved gable heads, each featuring a three-light window and top light. The bargeboards are decorated with lozenge enrichment and finials. Inside, there is panelling on the 16th-century staircase and in several rooms, along with a carved mantelpiece displaying the family arms. The curtilage includes modern railings and end piers with pineapple finials.
Nos 2 to 18 (even) form a group, with Nos 2 to 8 being of local interest.
