Description
This pair of K6 telephone kiosks, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, is located on Great Underbank in Stockport. Made from cast iron and glass, the kiosks are identical in design. Each kiosk features three glazed sides with eight registers and margin lights, and a solid rear side adorned with reeded decoration. Above the four arched sides is a canopy dome inspired by Sir John Soane, with a crown in relief above a glazed panel that reads 'TELEPHONE'. The kiosks are positioned back to back and contain modern telecommunications equipment.
Introduced in 1935 to mark the silver jubilee of King George V, the K6 telephone kiosk, often referred to as the 'Jubilee Kiosk', evolved from Scott's earlier K2 design from 1924. This design has become iconic, representing a blend of Neoclassical architecture with modern functionality.
The pair of K6 telephone kiosks on Great Underbank is recognized for their significance as an iconic example of industrial design, showcasing Scott's ability to adapt classical forms for contemporary use. They are well-preserved examples of this type, situated in a Conservation Area near other listed buildings, including the White Lion Hotel and 16-18 Great Underbank.
