Description

Commercial Street Mill is an unoccupied mill built in 1869, with its chimney dated 1871. The structure is made of orange red brick with ashlar dressings and features Welsh blue-slate roofs. It stands three storeys high and has a five-bay symmetrical facade constructed in Flemish bond brickwork. The mill has a plinth and rusticated quoins. A wide central cart-entry features a semicircular arch with rusticated voussoirs and quoins, along with a dated keystone. Above the cart-entry, there are taking-in doors for each floor, designed similarly to the windows, which have segmental arches with ashlar keystones and projecting sills. A decorative brick course runs along the eaves. The roof is hipped, with a truncated corner stack on the right. At the rear, there is a gabled two-storey engine-house and a tapering chimney, which is rectangular in plan. Attached to this is a single-storey, two-bay building that supports a cast-iron water tank with moulded panels. The right-hand return features seven bays of windows similar to the front, along with a two-bay, two-storey extension in a similar style. The return walls are constructed in English garden wall bond.
