Description
The Public Library, built between 1905 and 1906, features an ashlar facade with hammer-dressed stone on the sides and rear, topped with a Welsh blue-slate roof. The building consists of a two-storey front block and a single-storey rear range. Its six-bay symmetrical facade includes a first-floor entablature and a dentil cornice. The outer bays are slightly set forward and have tripartite windows, which are framed by Ionic outer pilasters and engaged columns acting as mullions.
On the first floor, quoin pilasters support a cornice and entablature, leading to an open triangular pediment above a window that is set in an eared architrave, complete with a triple keystone and segmental pediment. The central two bays feature a portal with Ionic pilasters and columns, an entablature that supports a segmental pediment, and a doorway with an eared architrave, frieze, and triple keystone. The tympanum above the doorway is adorned with a foliated carved cartouche, and the double doors consist of three raised-and-fielded panels. This doorway is flanked by narrow windows in eared architraves, also with triple keystones. Above, the windows are articulated by Ionic pilasters, and the building is topped with a bracketed cornice and a balustraded parapet. The front two bays have a hipped roof.
At the rear, the attached single-storey block has five bays of plain rectangular windows with chamfered lintels and sills. The building features gutter brackets and a coped gable with a ridge stack.
Inside, the tiled entrance hall boasts a mosaic floor and is flanked by Ionic pilasters. A wall plaque commemorates the library's establishment through the generosity of Andrew Carnegie of Skibo Castle, Scotland, in 1905-6, and its opening by Hall Caine on October 27, 1906. The library is included for its group value.
