Description
This is a group of four raised stone slabs located around the north-east corner of the Scatcherd Mausoleum, dating from 1667, 1675, 1695, and 1717. The slabs are made of ashlar and are set on raised panelled bases, forming an L-shaped arrangement with three slabs in a row and one positioned above.
The left slab commemorates "William Robinson of Drighlington," who died on May 21, 1695. It features a decorative carved border with an arched head and a winged angel's head in the spandrels, along with a central heart motif and initials. The central slab is dedicated to "Stephen Thompson," who died in 1675, and has a similarly decorative carved border with a heart motif and initials along with the date. The right slab honors "William Thompson," who died in 1667, and includes a decorative carved border with a heart motif at the base. Above these, there is a tomb for "Dorothy, the Daughter of the celebrated Edmund Waller of Beaconsfield in the County of Bucks Esqr.," who died on January 18, 1717. This slab features an incised border with carved capitals, an arched head with a skull keystone, and winged angel head spandrels.
