Description

This is a former bank building dating from the late 19th century. It is constructed of ashlar stone, with brick to the rear and sides, and the roof is not visible. The building is three storeys high and has an irregular facade of six bays. Channelled quoin pilasters are present on bays one, two, and five, linked by an entablature, cornice, and blocking course. The first bay features a tall archway leading to the rear, with a Gibbs surround. Above this archway is a three-light mullioned-and-transomed window with a triangular pediment, and a similar window is on the second floor, also with a triangular pediment. The second bay has an arched doorway with a Gibbs surround and carved, bracketed jambs, a pulvinated frieze, and a swan-neck pediment beneath a taller triangular pediment. Bays three, four, and five are articulated by engaged Tuscan columns. Cross-windows are present on the first and second floors of bays two, three, four, and five; those on the first floor have swan-neck pediments. The sixth bay features a doorway with a two-light mullioned overlight and a triangular pediment, along with cross-windows to each floor at a mezzanine level – likely intended to provide light to the staircase – with the second floor window featuring a double transomed swan-neck pediment. A dentil course is topped by a balustraded pediment. There are two brick stacks. The building is included on the list for its group value.
