Description

This is a former row of two shops, originally built around 1790, with a pair of weaver's cottages and a textile warehouse/manufactory occupying the upper floors. The building was altered and extended in the early 19th century and is now derelict. It is constructed of smooth-faced sandstone with a stone slate roof.

The south front has three bays. The first two bays represent the original 1790s construction, clearly defined by ashlar quions. Around 1810, a third storey was added, and another bay was extended forward slightly, also with quioned angles. The ground floor shop windows in the original two bays are blocked, with remnants of a two-light, two-pane sash window remaining, set within an applied box frame on brackets. A blocked doorway between the shops has monolithic lintel jambs and tie-stone jambs. The first floor windows are two-light, box-framed, applied timber sashes with casement-moulded cornices, which are now in a dilapidated condition. These cover the original two-light mullioned windows with plain stone surrounds. The upper floor has simple windows with plain stone surrounds and slightly projecting sills, lacking glazing but with evidence suggesting they originally contained sixteen panes. The third bay, which projects forward, has a doorway with tie-stone jambs and retains a six-panelled door. Above the doorway is a stone corbelled hood, formerly used for taking deliveries, with tie-stone jambs and a quoined lintel. A blocked full-depth ground floor shop window has a stone lintel.

At the rear (north elevation), three second-floor windows are visible. An early 19th-century addition to the left has a doorway with monolithic jambs and a wider doorway above, likely used for deliveries. To the right of this door is a fixed light with plain stone surrounds. A doorway cut into the earlier building section has a monolithic lintel at the junction with the quoins of that earlier construction. Upper floors have two-light mullioned windows with thin plain-stone surrounds and projecting sills, lacking glazing, but indicating original 24-paned windows. The earliest part of the rear elevation has a three-light mullioned window at first floor, and a similar window on the second floor. The building has widely spaced gutter brackets. A chimney stack was removed from the left gable around 1990, along with a ridge stack between the second and third bays. At the same time, doors and ground floor windows were blocked to secure the building by order of the local council.
