Description

Abbey House Veterinary Clinic and 4 Dogs Grooming Centre, formerly part of Morley Temperance Hall, is a veterinary clinic, dog parlour and flats, later converted into apartments, dated 1895. The building is constructed of dressed stone with ashlar dressings, rock-faced to the sides and rear, and has a Welsh blue-slate roof.

The two-storey, five-bay symmetrical facade features a central three-bay projection with angle pilasters that become fluted pilasters with Corinthian capitals. The semicircular-arched doorway has a moulded surround, a keystone, and a hoodmould terminating in diminutive columns with carved spandrels. The ground floor has four windows with chamfered lintels, each over a recessed panel; a band of recessed panels is positioned above. A sill band runs across the first floor. The central three bays contain a large Venetian window with arched lintels and keystones, topped by an open, pedimented gable with a keyed oculus in the apex and an urn finial. The outer bays have panels within eared and shouldered architraves, and bracketed dentil cornices with finials and large brackets.

The rear elevation displays a coped gable with a ridge stack. The left hand return has seven bays, with the first bay containing a doorway with consoles and a triangular pediment. The ground floor windows are square-headed with an ashlar impost band. The first floor windows are arched with ashlar impost and sill bands. Moulded gutter brackets are incorporated. The right hand return also has seven bays of similar windows, but without impost or sill bands. A lateral stack is set between the third and fourth bays. The left hand return's first bay has a doorway with consoles and a triangular pediment.
