Description
Croft House is a house and attached cottage, now used as offices. The cottage dates from the late 18th century, while the house is probably from the early 19th century. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed stone, with a felt roof on the house and a stone slate roof on the cottage. The front of the house is two stories tall, while the cottage has three stories at the rear.
The house features a five-bay symmetrical facade with a plinth, band, and eaves cornice. The central three bays project slightly under a triangular pedimented gable. The doorway, accessed by steps, has a fanlight with an architrave and is flanked by engaged Doric columns, with an entablature and dentil cornice above. All windows have flat arches, and the first floor has a sill band across the central three bays, with projecting sills on the outer bays. The roof is hipped.
The cottage, which is slightly set back on the right, has a doorway with tie-stone jambs to the left of two bays containing three-light flat-faced mullioned windows with slightly recessed mullions. The first bay has a first-floor window altered to two lights with an inserted window on either side.
At the rear of the house, there is a tall central stair window that retains a twenty-four-pane sash. The left-hand return features two bays of windows similar to those on the front. Attached to the rear right of the cottage is a two-storey, two-bay range with three-light windows and a central doorway with tie-stone jambs.
Inside the house, the stair hall contains a cantilevered stone stair with cast-iron balusters.
