Description
Barclays Bank, located at No. 74 on Loftus High Street, is a bank building dating from around 1900. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof, designed in the Baroque style. The building stands three storeys tall and has six bays. At the base, there is a plinth with a moulded chamfer. The ground floor showcases rusticated pilasters with moulded capitals flanking openings beneath an entablature that has a pulvinated frieze. The end bays contain doorways, with the left side now converted to a window, while the right end bay features three-panel double doors with a renewed overlight above.
In the middle two bays, there is a two-storey canted bay window, with curved aprons below the altered fixed-light glazing on the ground floor. The upper floors have sash windows set within architraves, with pediments and a sill string on the first floor. An entablature runs below a shallow parapet that has moulded copings. The roof is a concealed shallow-pitched hipped design, complete with corniced end and ridge stacks. There are late 19th and late 20th-century rear extensions that are not of special interest. The building is included for its group value.
