Description

The drinking fountain and trough, built in the late 19th century, along with the war memorial, steps, and railings, were created in 1922 by W. Arrowsmith and B.J. Wormleighton. The structure is made of dressed sandstone, steel, smooth Cornish granite for the war memorial, and concrete for the steps. It features a crescent-shaped retaining wall with flat copings that ramps up to a central semicircular-headed niche, which is adorned with vermiculate rusticated voussoirs. An iron lion-mask water spout is attached to a mosaic panel above a segmental-shaped trough. Above the niche, there is metal lettering that reads: "THESE LAID THE WORLD AWAY POURED OUT THE RED SWEET WINE OF YOUTH GAVE UP THE YEARS TO BE OF WORK AND JOY AND THAT UNHOPED SERENE THAT MEN CALL AGE."

The railings, which have stick balusters and metal wreath ornaments, are located on the crescent wall and along the walls flanking the curved stairs that lead up to the memorial. The memorial itself features a Celtic cross on a tapered shaft with a chamfered square base and plinth. A metal wreath is placed at the base of the south face of the shaft. Metal plates display the names of those who fell in the First World War (1914-1918) and the Second World War (1939-1945), along with the names of the designer and patron inscribed in metal lettering on the base. At the time of the survey, the fountain was not in use.
