Description

Providence Baptist Chapel, built in 1816 and enlarged in 1886, is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a hipped stone slate roof. The north elevation has a large doorway with an elliptical arched head, surrounded by ashlar and topped with a hood mould. There are two additional doorways with stone Doric pilasters, architrave, frieze, and cornice, each with good six-panelled doors and fanlights. Above the main doorway is an ashlar plaque with a moulded surround, and another plaque to the left reads: "Providence BAPTIST CHAPEL Erected 1816 Enlarged 1886." The ground floor has four single light windows with semi-circular heads, pronounced keystones, and imposts, while the first floor features eight windows similar to those below.

On the south elevation, the ground floor has six single light windows with stone surrounds, and a stone plaque stating "PROVIDENCE CHAPEL 1816." The first floor contains five single light windows with semi-circular heads, pronounced keystones, and imposts, although the eastern part of the first floor is obscured by a 20th-century extension.

Inside, the chapel is galleried on all sides, with an organ at the front. The gallery has a well-crafted panelled front supported by Corinthian columns. A good panelled pulpit is accessible via twin flights of stairs. There is a flagged terrace across the front, adorned with 1880s iron railings that return to the building, complemented by stone gate piers and iron gates.
