Description
Britannia Mills Chimney is a mid-19th century mill chimney located on Britannia Road in Slaithwaite. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and stands approximately 100 feet tall. The chimney has an eight-sided shape, reinforced with steel at the angles and featuring steel tie-bars at roughly 5-foot intervals. At the top, there is a brick parapet, which may be a later addition, supported by a large ashlar cornice. This cornice is held up by 24 moulded brackets, three on each side, resting on an ashlar string course. Below the string course, there are six slender niches with slightly pronounced ashlar semi-circular arched heads, and beneath these niches is another ashlar string course.
