Description

The Church of Saint James, built in 1796, is a classical church that underwent later additions, including a chancel. In 1890, a tower and side porches were added. The church features ashlar stone on the north and south elevations, while the chancel is made of hammer-dressed stone with stone quoins. It has a pitched slate roof with gable copings and consists of two storeys and a basement. The nave has seven bays with single light stained glass windows on both floors, and there is a moulded eaves cornice on the south side. A basement doorway on the south side is inscribed "NATIONAL SCHOOL 1824". The east gable includes an oculus at the apex and two single stained glass windows at gallery level, while the chancel features a Venetian window. The west tower has four reducing tiers and a clock face on all sides. It has round arched, louvred bell chamber openings with an overarch, and a cornice and parapet adorned with paired crocketted corner pinnacles. Flanking the tower are north and south side porches with round arched stained glass windows, and the entrance is dated 1896. Inside, there is a raking gallery on three sides supported by round piers, with panelled gallery fronts. The choir, located in a square bay before the chancel, is enclosed on all four sides by round arches on square responds.
