Description

The Church of St John the Evangelist is a church built in 1826, with a chancel added in 1871. It is constructed of stone and has a slate roof. The building features a nave, a west tower, a chancel, a south vestry, and a north organ loft. The nave has five bays, a sill course, and two-light windows, most of which have segmental transoms, positioned between weathered buttresses. It also has a top cornice and a parapet. The tower includes octagonal turrets and string courses, with a pointed entrance that has a timber fanlight and two-light louvred bell-openings. The tower is topped with a cornice and an embattled parapet, and the turrets project above the parapet, originally capped with pinnacles. The flanking porches have two-light straight-headed windows with transoms and canted angles, along with entrances on the north and south sides.

The three-bay chancel features a five-light east window and high two-light windows on the north and south sides. The vestry has two-light windows flanking the entrance, which has a shouldered lintel, and the organ loft is similar to the vestry.

Inside, the nave has three galleries supported by octagonal columns, with pointed arcading on the fronts. The flat ceiling includes ribs and bosses. An octagonal font has a moulded shaft and panelled sides, and the arms of George I are displayed on the west gallery. The chancel features a king and queen post roof, with two-bay arcades and quatrefoil columns leading to the organ loft and vestry. The stalls have elaborate timber fronts, and the pulpit, made of timber on a stone quatrefoil column, dates from 1907. There is a parclose screen to the vestry, which projects into the nave, and the east wall is panelled with cresting. The church also contains good 19th-century stained glass in the east and south windows.
