Description

Railway bridge No. 46, located at the end of Carlton Street, was built around 1837 for the Manchester and Bolton Railway, designed by engineer Jesse Hartley. The bridge is constructed of rock-faced stone and ashlar. It features an elliptical arch with keys, with the northern key displaying the letters "B/I E" and the southern key adorned with an unidentifiable animal crest. The bridge is also characterized by a balustrade that has square section balusters, along with some sections of inserted brickwork.
