Description

The Farnworth Cenotaph is a war memorial built in 1924, designed by J. and H. Patterson of Manchester for the Farnworth Urban District Council. It features a column made of ashlar Stanton gritstone, which is topped by a bronze sculpture. The column has a tapered square shaft that rises from a deep plinth, which is set upon two octagonal stone steps. At the top of the shaft, there are laurel wreaths that symbolize victory and the reward for sacrifice. The stepped cap with a squared plinth supports a bronze sculpture of a female figure, who is crowned with laurel, blowing the Trumpet of Fame while holding a wreath. The front (south) face of the column's plinth has a rectangular plaque with the inscription "They died that we might live. 1914-1918." The other faces of the plinth feature panels that commemorate the fallen from both World Wars.
