Description

Horrockses Mill is a cotton spinning mill built in 1915 for Horrockses and Crewdson. It features a brick exterior with a concrete and steel internal structure, topped with slate roofs and powered by steam.

The front building is three storeys high and consists of eight by five bays, with windows grouped in threes between pilasters. The main block is five storeys tall and nearly square in shape, with paired windows between pilasters and towers at three corners. The towers are ribbed with pilasters and have curved corbelling at the upper stage, topped with embattled parapets. The southeast tower has a pyramidal roof. An engine house, which is three storeys and five by three bays, projects from the southwest corner of the main block and features corner pilasters similar to those on the mill towers. Behind the main structure is a tall single-storey warehouse with an east-light roof. Additionally, there is a two-storey range measuring eleven by four bays that projects from the northwest of the main block.

Horrockses and Crewdson merged in 1887, and it is noted that Crewdson’s detached late 19th-century weaving mill to the east of the site was demolished in 2008 without consent. This mill is an impressive example of 20th-century mill architecture, showcasing lavish embellishments and strong architectural forms that contribute to a distinct company identity.
