Description
The Church of St Michael with St Bartholomew is a church built in 1851 by architects Dickson and Breakspear. It is constructed from rock-faced ashlar with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs arranged in alternating bands of plain and fishscale patterns. The church is designed in the Early English style, characterized by buttresses and angle buttresses with set-offs, as well as a corbel table at the eaves. The layout includes a chancel, a north vestry, a nave, and north and south porches.
The east end of the church showcases a triple lancet window with shafts, flanked by three lancets on either side of the chancel. The north vestry features a gabled doorway and a chimney turret. The nave has a small trefoil window high in the east gable, with paired or single lancets on the sides. The north and south porches each have doorways with shafts and carved capitals. The west end is adorned with a pair of lancets with shafts and a lower lancet on either side, topped by a small cinquefoil window in the gable, which is surmounted by an elaborate bellcote featuring shafting and a two-light window frame that displays the bells.
Inside, the chancel contains carved fittings, including a reredos, altar front, and communion rails. There is a structural pulpit located at the nave/chancel angle, accessible via a stair from the chancel. The nave includes a set of pews, which feature unusual choir stalls at the west end. The roofs are supported by archbraces rising from corbels, and the church contains stained glass windows in the east and west. This small church retains many original fittings, including the west choir stalls and structural pulpit, showcasing its elaborate detailing.
