Description
Clammerclough Railway Tunnel is a tunnel approximately 280 metres long, built in 1838 and the 1880s for the Manchester and Bolton Railway. The engineer was J. Hawkshaw. The northern section of the tunnel is semi-circular and lined with brick, featuring large stone voussoirs. The southern section has a horseshoe arch with a lining made of several courses of brick. It includes a roll-moulded surround and rubble abutments, as well as a rock-faced band and parapet. There are brick abutments on the west side.
