Description

Holt Head Sunday School is a former Sunday school building, now disused, that dates back to 1840. It is constructed from hammer dressed stone with ashlar dressings and features raised quoins at the front. The roof is made of stone slate and has gable copings along with stone brackets supporting the gutter.

The building has a symmetrical, three-bay pediment gabled front with a central door that has a pilastered surround and a fanlight above, which is inscribed in memory of those who fell in the 1914-18 war. Above the door, there is a cornice and a tablet that reads: HOLT HEAD GENERAL SUNDAY SCHOOL. The fanlight also has painted words stating: ERECTED 1840 BY VOLUNTARY SUBSCRIPTION.

On both floors, there are round arched sash windows with marginal glazing, featuring raised key and impost blocks. The centre window on the first floor is taller than the others. The building has two return bays that are two storeys high, with square headed windows that have marginal glazing. The side elevations are single storey with five bays, plus an additional bay set back at the far end, all featuring square headed windows as previously described. This structure is a good, unspoilt example of a rural type that may have originally included a chapel. The interior has not been inspected.
