Description
The old milestone at the junction with Holmfirth Road is a small stone post, likely dating from the mid-18th century. It is inscribed on three sides with the distances to Marsden, Penistone, and Honley, indicating 1 mile to Honley and ½ mile to Penistone, accompanied by a pointing gloved hand. However, it is presumed that the milestone is not in its original position, as the hand pointing towards Marsden indicates the wrong direction. The stone is significantly worn, making the inscriptions nearly unreadable. This milestone is located on an old cross-valley route that historically connected the upper parts of the Colne Valley to the upper parts of the Don Valley through the Holme Valley.
