Description

The Old Milestone is a guide post dated 1738, located at Farnley Moor End. It is a square stone post topped with a moulded cap, which originally supported a sundial, although the iron gnomon is now broken off. The post features inscriptions on all four sides, clearly marked with good lettering and hands indicating directions. The inscriptions read: i) Pennystone ii) Huddersfield 6 miles, 3 miles to Honley 2 miles iii) Holmfirth iv) Jo:n Hoyle 2 miles, Constable Tho:s Bothomley, Surveyor 1738. Additionally, there is a protective iron fence surrounding the milestone.
