Description
This is a school house, dating to 1766-7, with the right bay possibly being a slightly later addition. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with quoins and has a stone slate roof with gable copings on cut kneelers and a central stone stack. The building is two storeys high. A round arched doorway is positioned to the left, featuring a fanlight above a single light window. To the right of the doorway are two bays with Venetian windows on the ground floor, and 3-light windows on the first floor. A quoined, straight joint between the bays indicates separate construction phases. A round arched plaque to the left provides information that the school was for the education of the poor in Thurstonland, built in 1766-7 with funds from the last will of Mrs Ann Ludlam of Blackhouse, Thurstonland and later, Pontefract, and that the adjoining school house was constructed at the same time by voluntary contribution. An altered gabled wing extends to the rear of the house.
