Description
Probably dating from the 17th century, with later 18th or 19th century work and recent alterations, Upper Fold Farmhouse was likely originally two farmhouses, now divided into three dwellings. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed stone on the right and rendered on the left, with quoins present. It has a stone slate roof with hollow chamfered gable copings on cut kneelers, along with ashlar stacks and 19th-century brackets supporting the gutter.
The left end, now two dwellings, features a blocked central doorway with chamfered reveals and a deep lintel. A 19th-century doorway is visible to the right, alongside a three-light double chamfered window, mirroring its counterpart to the left. A continuous drip mould is carried over the original doorway. The first floor has two four-light windows, each with two mullions removed, and a single three-light window.
The right-hand end primarily exhibits 18th- or 19th-century openings, having been recently altered to maintain visual consistency. A central doorway features a deep lintel and chamfered reveals, flanked by a three-light window to the left and a six-light window to the right, the latter with an added extra light. The first floor shows a two-light and a six-light window which have been altered from earlier openings. A drip mould, similar to that visible on the left section, has been removed from the ground floor. A single two-light double chamfered window is present on the right side.
The interior of the right-hand end includes 18th- or 19th-century fireplaces, and a upper floor fireplace that may be from the 17th century. One tie-beam is inscribed with the date 1681.
