Description

This guide stoop, dated 1761, is a milestone located at the junction of Thick Hollins Road and Wilshaw Road in Meltham. It is a tall stone post with a rounded top, inscribed on three sides. The inscriptions indicate distances to Marsden, Penistone, and Holmfirth, with the distances being 4 miles, 1 mile, and 2 miles, respectively. There is also a very faint pointing gloved hand on the stone. This guide stoop is situated on an old cross-valley route that connects the upper reaches of the Colne Valley with the upper reaches of the Don Valley, passing through the Holme Valley.
