Description
This is an 18th-century guide stoop, or signpost, located at the junction of Crosland Road and Lindley Moor Road. Erected in 1755, it is made of local gritstone and has a rectangular cross section, standing just under 1 meter tall. The stoop features two faces that are inscribed with approximate mileages and images of pointing hands, which have cuffs. The stone has experienced some minor damage, including the loss of some lettering.
On the north-east face, which has a semi-circular top, the inscriptions read: "To Milnsbridge 2 miles" with a hand pointing left, "Halifax 4" with a hand pointing right, and "A Mallinson Surveyor 1755."
The south-east face has a sloping top and is inscribed: "To Brighouse 3 miles" with a hand pointing right, "Marsden 5 miles" with a hand pointing left, and includes an Ordnance Survey benchmark.
At the time of inspection, a modern yellow water hydrant plaque was affixed to the otherwise blank north-east face, but this is not considered part of the historical interest of the stoop.
