Description
The Almshouses, located on Wilshaw Road, were built in 1871 by John Kirk of Huddersfield for Eleanor Hirst of Wilshaw in memory of her daughter Mary. This pair of almshouses is constructed from hammer dressed stone and features a pitched slate roof with gable copings, barge boards, and a tall stone stack at each gable. The building has two storeys and includes a central single-storey stone porch with a hipped slate roof (which has been replaced) and two open round arched entrances. On the ground floor, to the left and right of the porch, there are 2-light windows with round arched lights and sashes, each with a hood mould. The first floor has a single round arched sash window that extends above the eaves level, designed as a dormer with a hipped slate roof. Lean-to extensions of similar age are present at each gable.
