Description
The Almshouses, built in 1871 by John Kirk of Huddersfield for Eleanor Hirst of Wilshaw in memory of her daughter Mary, are a pair of almshouses made of hammer dressed stone. They feature a pitched slate roof with gable copings, barge boards, and a tall stone stack at each gable. The building is two storeys high and has a central single storey stone porch with a hipped slate roof and barge boards, which includes two open, round arched entrances. On the ground floor to the left and right, there are 2-light windows with round arched lights and sashes, topped with hood moulds. The first floor has a single round arched sash window that extends above the eaves level, designed as a dormer with a hipped slate roof. Lean-to extensions of a similar date are present at each gable.
