Description
The Village Hall and adjacent private residence were originally built in 1873 by John Kirk for Joseph Hirst, and were initially a school and schoolmaster’s house. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a pitched slate roof; the school section has shaped gables, large pyramidal finials, and one ball finial. The school is single-storey, while the house is two storeys high.
The school's front facade features a Tudor arched entrance with the inscription "St Mary's Schools," and formerly had a bell on a bracket above. There are three two-light chamfered windows to the left, one to the right, and a six-light mullioned and transomed window to the left gable. To the right of the school facade is the entrance to the house, and the gable end of the two-storey house. This gable features a shaped gable with a ball finial and a two-light chamfered window on each floor, with drip moulds and label stops.
The main facade of the house is symmetrical, with three bays and three two-light chamfered windows on each floor. The ground-floor windows have drip moulds, while the first-floor windows extend above the eaves level as dormers with gabled roofs.
