Description
Milestone located approximately 200 metres south of the junction with Royd Moor Road, dating from the mid-18th century. This is a monolithic, flat-topped pillar with weathered faces and partly-obliterated lettering. The south-east side reads "(P)enistone/(1) mile", the north-east side reads "Hudder(s)field", and the north-west side reads "Holm/firth/4 miles". It is situated on a packhorse route that connected Penistone to Meltham and Marsden. A guide stoop further along this route towards Holmfirth is dated 1761. This milestone was erected after 1738, as distances were only indicated after this date.
