Description

This is a barn attached to the southwest corner of Wood Top, dating from the early 17th century. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The barn has two storeys and is double-aisled, positioned at right angles to the 17th-century farmhouse, Wood Top. The building has quoins and a square-headed cart entry, along with two basket-arched doorways leading to the mistal and an end room on the right. Above this end room is a gabled warehouse with a first-floor doorway that has tie-stone jambs, accessed by a flight of stone steps that originally ran in the opposite direction.

The left-hand return wall showcases an impressive wide gable with a mistal doorway in the left corner, which has a heavy lintel (currently blocked). It also features chamfered arrow slit ventilators arranged in a pattern of one over two over three over four. The rear of the barn faces a field and includes a similar tall square-headed cart entry with a chamfered surround, which has been blocked by brick infill, along with two arrow slit ventilators on either side. The mistal doorway on the left has a chamfered surround, and there are additional ventilators and inserted first-floor windows on the right-hand return wall.

Inside, the barn consists of three bays that preserve the original timbered structure. The posts are set on stylobats and are braced to the arcade plate and tie-beam, featuring principal trusses with angle struts and a diagonally set ridge. The mistal in the right-hand bay is separated from the barn by a low wall made of large ashlar blocks, with a hay loft situated above the stalls.
