Description
Barn. Dated 1658. The barn is constructed of large dressed stone, with a stone slate roof to the aisles and corrugated asbestos sheeting to the main range. It is a two-aisled barn. The north front has a tall cart entry with a heavy monolithic lintel, composite jambs, and stop-chamfered surround set within a portal of the aisle. In the re-entrant angle is a depressed Tudor arched doorway with a stop-chamfered surround. A similar doorway is located to the left, leading to the mistal, which has a hay loft above. The left-hand return wall has a partly coped gable with kneelers. There are three rows of arch-headed ventilators with sunken spandrels. The rear elevation has a similar disposition of doorways to the mistal and aisle, and a cart entry set within a portal. In the re-entrant angle is a datestone inscribed with the initials "I D" set within a tressure. The right-hand return wall is backed by earth. This side features arch-headed ventilators with sunken spandrels and an unusual cusped quatrefoil to the apex. Inside, the barn has five bays, with 2 posts and trusses braced to the arcade plate and tie beam. The two central trusses are carried on stone walls either side of the cart entries. One king-post truss and three principal trusses are present, with angle struts and a yoke to the apex. This is an unusual example of a 17th-century dated barn in this region.
