Description
Wood Top is a house dated 1637, marked with the initials "I M S". It is constructed from large dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and follows a three-room, through-passage plan.
The south front showcases double chamfered mullioned windows on the ground floor, with chamfered mullioned windows on the first floor, except for the third cell, which may be older and has a double chamfered mullioned window. The first cell does not have a window but instead has a large doorway, which retains its hoodmould. Above this doorway is an 8-light window on the first floor. The doorway features a Tudor arched lintel with the date set within a decorative tressure, and composite jambs with a stop chamfered surround and sunken spandrels.
There is a 2-light fire-window and a 6-light housebody window that has a hoodmould with decorative stops, along with another 6-light window above. The masonry shows some disturbance. The third cell has a doorway that has been taken from a 2-light window next to a 4-light window with a hoodmould, and a single arched light. Above this is a 4-light window. The house has three stacks along the ridge.
The rear of the building displays three distinct phases of construction. It features double chamfered mullioned windows of two and three lights, with a three-light window above. There is a cross-window at mezzanine level to light the stair. The next cell projects forward and has a 7-light cavetto moulded window with arched heads and sunken spandrels, with a 5-light double chamfered mullioned window above. A Tudor arched doorway with a stop chamfered surround is also present, along with disturbed stonework. Two cavetto moulded 2-light mullioned windows have a light opened between them. The left-hand return wall has a chamfered mullioned window of three lights, with a two-light window above it on the first floor.
