Description
A row of single-bay cottages dating from the early 19th century, located on Bridges Lane, also known as Nos. 2 to 20 River Street. The cottages are constructed of dressed stone with a stone slate roof. They are two storeys high facing Bridges Lane, but rise to four and five storeys at the rear, facing River Street, above the dwellings. Each cottage has two-light sash windows on each floor, and a doorway with monolithic jambs. No. 61 has an altered ground floor to accommodate a shop window, while Nos. 67 and 69 feature wider single sash windows. The roofline is stepped in three places, with nine stacks positioned along the ridge. Quoins are present. The rear elevation presents an impressive range of flat-faced mullioned windows of three, four and five lights across each floor. Nos. 18 and 20 River Street project forward. A passage runs from the front to the rear between Nos. 16 and 18. The row is prominent within the landscape.
