Description
This building in Hebden Bridge, originally a Baptist Chapel known as Ebenezer, was constructed in 1777. It is now used as an arts centre and antique market. The chapel is built of dressed stone with a stone slate roof and exhibits a symmetrical five-bay facade. It features quoins, a band, an eaves cornice, and raised ashlar dressings. The outer bays contain sash windows with plain stone surrounds and projecting sills. The doorways in the second and fourth bays have lugged architraves, a pulvinated frieze, and triangular pediments with a modillioned surround; the tympanum of the right-hand door displays the date 1777. Above are sash windows. The central bay is defined by paired windows with semi-circular arched heads, moulded imposts, and a triple keystone. A square sundial is positioned between these windows at first-floor level. Inscriptions on the sundial head read: “Quod petis umbra est/1833/ Lat.53°48' Decl.3°40'” along with a list of days when the dial is slow. An early 19th-century three-storey bay is attached to the left-hand side, incorporating a shop window on the ground floor and two-light sash windows on the first and second floors. A gable stack is present. The interior retains cast iron Tuscan columns that support a gallery, the well of which has been floored over.
