Description

This is a row of three cottages located on Church Street in West Tanfield, built in the early 19th century. The cottages are constructed of coursed squared stone, with a pantile roof. The row is five bays in total, with the left-hand cottage (No. 3) having a single bay and the others (Nos. 4 and 5) displaying symmetrical two-bay facades. Quoins are visible on the exterior. A four-panel door is located to the left of the right-hand bay, and a half-glazed door is situated to the right of the left-hand bay. A third half-glazed door is found to the left of the central bay; all three doors have plain stone lintels. All windows are 12-pane, two-light side-sliding sash windows with stone lintels. Brick stacks are present at the ends of the row, and two rise from the ridge. Early 20th-century wings have been added to the rear of the cottages and are not considered to be of architectural interest. The cottages are included in the listing primarily for their group value in the historic streetscape.
