Description
Tanfield Bridge is a bridge built in 1734 and later in the 18th century. It is constructed of ashlar stone. The west side, dating from 1734, features three segmental arches with voussoirs and hoodmoulds. There are triangular sectional cutwaters on either side of the central arch that rise into pilasters. The round end piers have semi-spherical caps. The bridge has a band and a parapet with flat copings. Inscribed on the center of the parapet is the phrase, "Division of North and West Riding." The east side is similar but has banded and rusticated stonework. Half of the bridge spans North Stainley with Slenningford.
