Description
Chantry Cottage is a house that dates from the 13th, 17th, and 18th centuries, with some later alterations. It is constructed of ashlar and rubblestone, topped with a pantile roof. The building has two storeys and five bays, with the street frontage featuring one storey and the main front facing the river.
On the river front, to the right, there is a 13th-century chamfered pointed-arched stone doorway with a board door. To the left of this doorway are two side-sliding sash windows set in 17th-century moulded and chamfered surrounds; the right window previously had two mullions, while the left window had one. The left-hand bay projects forward and forms a gabled wing with quoins. There is a small square opening in a stone surround on the ground floor, and above it is a large early 20th-century casement window in the gable. To the right, there are four twelve-pane casement windows on the first floor, along with a small two-pane casement inserted between the two left-hand windows.
Historically, the lower half of the house is what remains of a medieval chantry, and the pointed-arched door is shared with Chantry House Cottage.
