Description
Rochdale Canal Lock Number 10 is a lock built in 1798, engineered by W. Jessop and W. Crossley. It features large dressed stone retaining walls with rebates for gates and is designed to accommodate a double set of bottom gates. Stone stairs at the northern end lead down to a lower water level. The lock was intended to handle vessels measuring 74 feet long, 14 feet 2 inches wide, and with a draft of 4 feet from the Manchester end. The design included a double set of bottom gates to accommodate 57-foot vessels from the Calder and Hebble, which would save approximately 50 tons of water. However, there is no evidence that these intended double gates were ever installed.
