Description

No. 5 Stubbing Square is a house dated 1705, constructed of large dressed stone with a tiled roof. It is two storeys tall and has a T-shaped layout, featuring a single-storey porch on the same side as the gabled wing. Most windows are missing some or all of their mullions. The gable of the wing includes a three-light double chamfered mullioned window with nearly square reveals, and there is a former double chamfered stepped window with two over four lights on the first floor, which carries a date plaque. The gable is coped and has kneelers and finials.

The right-hand return wall has windows that have been inserted in a way that is not in keeping with the original design. The main range is set back and features a three-light double chamfered mullioned window, with a similar but altered window above on the first floor. The original porch has a plinth, a doorway with a chamfered surround, and a coped gable with kneelers. The left-hand return wall has double chamfered mullioned windows with four and two lights on the ground floor, two three-light windows on the first floor, and an apex window with two chamfered lights.

At the rear, there is a double chamfered mullioned window in the housebody with eight lights, originally featuring a king mullion (three lights plus five). The first floor has a former chamfered mullioned window with eight lights. The rear of the wing breaks forward but is covered by a cat-slide roof that connects with the main range, which has a two-light chamfered mullioned window. The house has two stacks. Inside the housebody, there is a fireplace with a segmental arched lintel supported on corbelled jambs.
