Description
This is a row of six cottages, built in the early 19th century. They are made of dressed stone with a watershot finish and feature a stone slate roof, although No. 6 has synthetic tiles. The buildings have quoins, with Nos. 1, 2, and 3 being three storeys tall, while Nos. 4, 5, and 6 are two storeys with a lower roofline. Each cottage has a doorway with tie-stone jambs and a three-light flat-faced mullioned window on each floor. The three-storey cottages have well-dressed gable stacks, and there are three additional stacks on the ridge of the two-storey cottages. The right-hand return wall includes two doorways with tie-stone jambs, likely leading to coal houses, and a doorway to No. 1 at the first-floor level, which has a square window on each floor. This doorway provides access to the top storey, which was formerly used by all the cottages for hand-loom weaving. Each cottage has an internal communicating door at each floor level. These cottages were built as an investment by a local funeral club to fund burials.
