Description

A row of six single-cell cottages dating from around 1800, located on Smithwell Lane in Heptonstall. The cottages are constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof, and feature quoins. The buildings at numbers 8 to 12 rise higher than those at numbers 2 to 6, but are of the same build. Each cottage has a doorway with a sill-tie jamb to the left of a five-light flat-faced mullioned window, featuring a wider central light which was formerly a sash window, now with altered glazing. A similar window is located on the first floor of each cottage. Six dressed stacks rise from the ridge. The rear elevation has two windows of two lights for each cottage. Internally, the cottages originally had intercommunicating doorways, which are now blocked.
