Description

A row of four single-cell cottages dating to approximately 1820, located on Smithwell Lane in Heptonstall. The cottages are constructed from watershot masonry with a stone slate roof. They are elevated above road level and are accessed via a flight of five stone steps with a flagged landing and cast iron railings at the front of each property; coal cellars lie beneath. Quoins are present, and the gables are coped with kneelers. Each cottage has a doorway with a tie-stone jamb to the left of a three-light, flat-faced mullioned window with a projecting sill. A four-light window is positioned above the doorway on the first floor, with one solid light. Four stacks are visible along the ridge. The rear of numbers 28 and 28A projects further, featuring paired doorways in the centre and three-light windows on either side. A stair window is distinguished by a semi-circular arch, incorporating an impost block and keystone. A tall stack is located on the north-east corner.
